The first day of the Australian spring - 1 September - was proclaimed by the Governor-General of Australia, Bill Hayden, in 1992 to be Australia's National Wattle Day for everyone across Australia to celebrate at the same time. This national day was a unifying gesture as many individual wattle days are celebrated on many different dates in different states and territories from July to October when the local wattle flowering is at its best.

Wattles have been a popular symbol of Australia and Australians for more than a century, and have long held special meanings for Australians. Of the 1,070 species of Acacia native to Australia, many hundreds have yellow blossoms and are collectively known as "golden wattles." However, there is only one Acacia pycnantha (Golden Wattle) that was officially gazetted as Australia's national floral emblem in 1988.
The wattle is a unifying symbol for all Australians. It is a symbol of our land and its people, and it represents our values and our way of life.

Wattle Day was first celebrated in more than one state on the same day in 1910, with events taking place in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The First World War (1914-1918) saw a desire to sell sprigs of wattle and wattle badges to raise money for troops overseas, and later for maimed soldiers.

National Wattle Day is celebrated as a day to commemorate the country's land and people. It is a day that allows all Australians to come together and celebrate what it means to live in Australia and be Australian.
