This figurine, commemorating the Sandakan prisoner of war camp in Borneo, pays tribute to the Australian and British victims of Japanese brutality in World War II. A solemn promise to remember the truth, it stands for all nations who lost loved ones to the cruelty of Japanese camps. The Sandakan POW camp, infamous for the death marches in 1945, marked one of the greatest atrocities against Allied POWs in the Asia-Pacific theatre. Of the 2,434 prisoners, only six Australians survived. The forced marches, marked by starvation and brutality, ended in Ranau, where survivors faced execution. The atrocities continued even after the official Japanese surrender.

One of my wife's relations was one of the 6 survivors and my step father was in the first Australian regiment that went to Sandakan to liberate the men
I’m so happy I bought this. At first I was a little hesitant to purchase, as the subject invokes a lot of emotion. I was worried it might be a bit too much but when it arrived I was really pleased. The sculpture is beautiful, delicate and unimposing. The artist has captured pain and struggle but despite the harrowing subject, has still managed to produce something incredibly uplifting and serene. I have the piece on display in my lounge room in a prominent position and ties in just beautifully. I find myself being drawn back to it again and again and I’m proud to I have it. It’s great quality for the price and I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s hopefully something that will remain in the family for years to come.
Extremely happy with the product and the service.
