Description

The Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal is a military service medal established by the Australian Government in 1993 to recognize the service of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who provided logistic and support functions during the Vietnam War. The medal honors those who served in non-combat roles, such as transport, supply, and maintenance, and acknowledges their essential contributions to the overall war effort. The Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal is a symbol of appreciation for the dedication and commitment of ADF personnel who played crucial supporting roles during the Vietnam War.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal, a person must have been serving in the Australian Defence Force or as a civilian employed by the Australian government during the Vietnam War. The individual must have provided direct logistic or support services to the Australian armed forces, either within Vietnam or in the waters adjacent to Vietnam, for a minimum of 30 days between 29 May 1964 and 27 January 1973. The award can be granted to both living and deceased individuals, with posthumous awards being made to the family or next of kin.

Design

The medal is designed as a circular, silver-nickel medallion featuring the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, with the inscription "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D." surrounding the effigy. The reverse of the medal displays a symbolic representation of the mythological Greek figure Hermes, the messenger of the gods, with a background of flames, symbolizing the harsh conditions faced by those who served in Vietnam.

Ribbon

The ribbon of the Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal features three central red stripes over a base of yellow, which is in turn bordered by a dark blue and red stripe on the left, and dark brown with light blue on the right.

Vietnam Logistic & Support Medal Full Size Court Mounted

The court mounting of medals involves securing medals to a stiff backing board, along with the placement of a brooch fitting on the board. This ensures that the medals remain firmly in place and do not shift or move about while being worn.

It is mandatory for active members of the Australian Defence Force to have their medals court mounted, as it is considered the appropriate method of presenting military honours in a professional and respectful manner. By doing so, the medals are given proper recognition and are displayed in a neat and organized fashion.
