Description

A Special Release from the BrandNet Archives

For more than two decades, BrandNet has retained selected numbered pieces from many of our limited-edition collections. These Archive Editions include significant and desirable numbers deliberately set aside when the collections were originally released - pieces that have remained within the BrandNet Archives, in some cases for many years.

Now, for the first time, selected Archive Editions are being made available to collectors. Each number is offered individually and priced according to its significance and rarity, giving you the opportunity to choose the exact numbered edition you would like to own.

Select your preferred Archive Edition from the available numbers above. Once a particular number is sold, it leaves the BrandNet Archives and will not be available again.

Signed by Two of the Last Diggers

This montage carries the signatures of two of Australia's final living links to the First World War: Alec Campbell, the last Australian survivor of Gallipoli, and Frank MacDonald MM, Tasmania's last First World War veteran. In 2002, thirteen montages were signed by both men. Six are held in the BrandNet Archives, each physically sighted and confirmed in good condition.

Alec Campbell, 2731, 15th Battalion. Born in Launceston in 1899, Alec enlisted in the AIF in July 1915 at just 16, claiming to be 18. He reached Gallipoli late in the campaign and served as a water carrier with the 15th Battalion. After Roy Longmore's death in 2001, he became the sole surviving Australian veteran of the campaign. He died in Hobart on 16 May 2002, aged 103. BrandNet's relationship with Alec helped inspire the Sands of Gallipoli collections launched in 2004.

Frank MacDonald MM, 53, 40th Battalion. Born at Ulverstone in 1896, Frank served with the 40th Battalion on the Western Front. As a signaller he maintained communications under heavy fire and received the Military Medal for his conduct in 1917. He served again in the Second World War and received France's Legion of Honour in 1998. He died on 23 August 2003, aged 107, and Tasmania commemorates him through the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize.

About the Army Centenary Montage

Created for the Australian Army's centenary in 2001, this handcrafted, three-dimensional work tells 100 years of Army service, from the Boer War and both world wars through Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, peacekeeping and East Timor. The original guide identifies 30 numbered features and 48 campaign ribbons. Highlights include:

  • A rifle cartridge case recovered from the battlefield at Hamel, France
  • A ration-pack spoon, the "Fred", engraved with the registered number and carrying the seal signed by Chief of Army LTGEN Peter Cosgrove
  • A 2001 soldier painted in oils by Jeff Isaacs, with earlier generations drawn by Monty Wedd
  • A 3D paper-tole Australian flag by Fiona Dempsey
  • 48 campaign ribbons from the Queen's South Africa Medal to INTERFET and the NATO Medal
  • A gold plated plaque: "The Australian Army 1901 - 2001 Ordinary people, extraordinary service"

Directed by retired LTCOL Charles Reynolds, with lead design by Stephen Rainey, still with BrandNet as Head of Design. Historical advice came from Christopher Jobson, the Army History Unit and ADF Honours and Awards. 5% of proceeds were pledged to Legacy, and $40,000 was presented in 2002.
